Welcome to Surya Yoga

Surya Yoga is part of a community initiative to bring traditional Hatha and Ashtanga yoga to the local neighborhoods north of Copenhagen in and around Lyngby-Taarbaek and Skodsborg-Vedbaek.

We have weekly classes, as well as workshops during the holidays. We are a volunteer based organization with little to no fees.

Significance of Surya in Vedic Traditions

The Sanskrit name Surya refers to the sun. The Surya Namaskara (salutations) are a vedic tradition that are associated with the enlightened sages of the Vedic Age. The sun symbolizes spiritual consciousness. In yoga, the sun is represented by the surya nadi (the pingala) which is the pranic channel carrying prana. Prana is the vital, creative, life giving force.

The Surya Namaskara is a complete Sadhana, practice, in itself. The asanas in the surya namaskar vitalise all parts of the body and are also critically synchronized with the breath, making it a form of full body pranayama. This leads to a balanced energy system at both the mental and physical levels.

Meet Your Yoga Teacher

Shobi

Shobi is a computational biologist who grew up in Copenhagen and has lived across the USA, Hong Kong, and Singapore for over 20 years. She discovered yoga 15 years ago at the Iyengar Yoga Centre of Hong Kong and has been a devoted practitioner ever since. Amid the fast pace of scientific research and motherhood, yoga became a steady space for cultivating strength, balance, and mental clarity.

Curious about different lineages and their unique benefits, Shobi has practiced Iyengar, Hatha, Ashtanga, Rocket, and Dharma Yoga. She is certified in both Rocket Yoga—a playful, dynamic form of Ashtanga—and LAAIC, a blended tradition of classical Hatha, Bikram, and traditional Ashtanga.

Her classes are rooted in self-compassion and invite students into dynamic, joyful explorations of movement and breath. Outside the studio, Shobi loves spending time outdoors hiking with her dog, and is always happy with a cup of tea and a good book ☕📚
